    Last call for Yarnival!

You know you wanna submit something.  Come on. Do it. Do it.

Just in case you've forgotten, or aren't familiar with Yarnival, I'll provide you with a crash course. Yarnival is a blog carnival, or a collection of blog posts dealing with a certain subject/theme. So you could have a blog carnival about cats. Or cannibals. Or cannibal cats. This one happens to be about knitting though, so lets not go crazy submitting posts about cannibal cats, 'kay? Anyhoo, I'll read through all of the super fantastic submissions from y'all and put them together in a one big post of goodness for your reading pleasure. It is a great way to find new blogs and bloggers, and ANYONE can submit a post, it doesn't matter how long you've been blogging.

If you're still not sure what this is all about, please click here to read Eve's (the mastermind behind this project) explanation of Yarnival.

Now....don't you want to submit one of your wonderful blog posts to this edition of Yarnival?? Time is running out! The deadline is March 1st, so get to submitting!

In case you missed the 483534693724957293857b links to the submission link I've thrown at ya in this post, lemme make it clear:

Click here to submit your blog entry using the submission form.

If you won't do it for me, do it for Sampson. Maybe it will cheer him up.

    No more bare walls!

Holy crap, y'all. How good was Heroes? I'm going to remember how much it kicked ass  and use it to balance out what I sadly suspect is going to be a craptacular Sunday night. (Lesson learned: don't read spoilers.)

I finally took a pic of the Jaywalkers in natural light, hanging out with some mint and oregano in my garden.

    Dscn3405

I still love these socks. I'm on a sock roll right now. I just finished the first sock in my pair of Monkeys, and am trying to hurry up and finish a commissioned scarf in order to get started on the second sock. Such a great pattern.

Since I mentioned my "new" wall decor yesterday, I thought I'd share some of it with y'all.

This idea was shamelessly lifted from the latest issue of Adorn. That would be Sampson on the left, and Cricket on the right.

    Dscn3409

The photos in the large frame may look familiar, as they have all appeared on this blog in the last few months. From top to bottom, the inside of Stacey's Hedera, a close up of Bejeweled, and a shot of the heel of the Hedera socks. The frame itself was a shadowbox I picked up last spring on clearance at Target for, I kid you not, 2.67. Mat and all. I got two of them.

    Dscn3412

The piece on the top right hand side is something I picked up on clearance at Marshall's for three bucks. It's a carved wooden flower floated in a thick glass frame. I put some decorative paper behind it, and voila, wall art. The bottom frame holds some scrap fabric I had laying around.

    Dscn3410

The large frame here is the other Target shadowbox, and is filled with different versions of the same photo. The photo was taken in 2004 when B and I went to St. Augustine for a weekend. It was a completely accidental picture, but we both adore it so much I wanted to put it on the wall somehow. The pics of Sam and I was B's Valentine's gift last year, and the other frame contains another piece of scrap fabric.

I'm quite impressed with my new wall decor. It was cheap, looks pretty, and *BONUS* helped me clean up a bit in the old craft closet. Now, to find something to use as a headboard in the master bedroom, and some wall decor for in there. Any thoughts?

    Monday Loves IV

I watched Marie Antoinette this weekend, and while I wouldn't say it was the greatest film on Earth, it was lovely to look at. The colors and the way light is used in the movie are stunning, and I was completely mesmerized.

I adore Keri Smith's blog. I find the simplicity of her work inspiring.

This tutorial over at Bella Dia has been on my "must do" list for months. I hope to sit down and actually do it in the next week or so. I'm on this home decorating kick, we've lived here for two years and just this weekend actually hung stuff on the walls. It feels so much more inviting now, and I assembled or created all of the art pieces myself, which makes me happy. The fabric panels will be hung on this odd pass through half-wall between the kitchen and the living room, and I think they will really liven up the place.

The home decorating frenzy has me searching for unique art, and I've found some prints I would love to buy. Must wait. Must pay rent. Sigh.

    I heart Kathleen Lolley.

    Spinach. So yummy.

This made me squee in geeky delight.

All of Laura's pattern are amazing, but I really love this one. I'd like to make it, eventually.

As everyone knows by now, I'm a huge fan of lists, which is only one of the many reasons I love this site.

I watch the Oscars primarily to see what people are wearing, and these were my favorites. How 'bout that Helen Mirren?? She's smokin' hot. I can only dream of looking that good at that age. Also? Yay for Mr. Scorsese!

Looking at all the wonderful submissions for the Softie Awards is so much fun.

All things patchwork, especially Japanese-inspired patchwork, are very appealing to me right now. I'd love to make something like this but honestly do not know where to begin. Anyone have any good resources for a complete newbie sewer/quilter??

My latest animal obsession: foxes. This may have something to do with the fox that lives in the woods behind my house. These cards crack me up and make me think of a certain someone. Hey there, Foxy Lady!

    Two words: Cinnamon Dolce.

ETA: Doing some housekeeping 'round here....if you left a comment earlier and it is missing now, it wasn't intentional! Sorry. :(

    Southern Knitters Web Ring

    Welcome, Southern Knit Bloggers!

Hey y'all! Fancy meetin' you here!

Wanna join this here ring? We'd be pleased to have you! Give the rules a quick look-see, and if everything sounds good to you, come on and join us!

    1) You must be a resident of one of the following states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee. I don't remember my Confederate history very well, so one or more of these sites may not technically be Southern, but this isn't that kind of site, people. Heck, if you were born in, or even near, the South and consider yourself Southern, we'll letcha in. I'm from the West Coast, but have adopted the South as my home, and I run the joint, so I can't be picky now, can I?!

    2) You must write a blog that is primarily about knitting and/or spinning. This is a Knitting web ring, see? So, yeah, the whole knitting/spinning/fiber arts thing comes into play here. I mean, you don't have to talk about knitting or spinning or yarn or whatever ALL the time. I'm the queen of rambling nonsensical digressions, and I talk about my dog a whole lot, so hey, I know how it goes. Still though. We're a knitting/fiberly pursuits ring.

    3) The ring code should be visible on your page. Do I really have to say this? I mean, what's the point of joining the ring if you don't use the code? I can't move you to the members section of the ring until you put the code on your site. No code=not officially added to the ring. Once the code is there, I'll gladly move y'all over to the ring so we can all be attached in a circle of knitterly goodness.

4.) I check the ring queue about twice a week. At this time, I check to make sure your site has the ring code added. If it doesn't, I will re-send the code. If it does, this is the time when I move you to the members section of the ring. I have a day job that keeps me fairly busy, so if you've been sitting in the queue for a few days, please be patient with me. The queue also tends to get mobbed by spammers, and it's easier for me to check it periodically throughout the week than to check it every time I get a new submission.

    5) I think I'm insulting all Southerners by saying this, but in case some roving band of KKKK group (knitting Ku Klux Klan) decides to take this ring on as their personal platform, this isn't any kind of heritage-ist, white supremacist, segregationist web ring, so just get those thoughts right out of your head.

If you immediately conjure up those images about the South, then you should visit us occasionally. We're no worse off than other parts of the country as far as idiots go. But, if you're in the ring and you're going to be rude to anyone, you're going to make the rest of us look bad, so please refrain from doing so. We've got an image problem, people, and you're not helping matters. If it gets bad enough, you may be asked to leave the group and nobody wants that.

Act right like our mammas taught us.

    5) Consider welcoming new members real friendly-like, like with a virtual "Hey," a clever pitcher postcard, or an electronic casserole using a recipe from the latest Southern Living. Maybe if you're feeling especially productive and generous, you could knit them a mailbox cozy or something. Hospitality, people, that's what we're known for, and we've got to protect the shreds of positive image we have left. We're all in this together and it'll all come back to you eventually. Hence the "ring" part of this gig. Get it? Cyclical. That's what it's about.

6.) On Buttons-Please just take the button already. Linking to the image is impolite and uses up my bandwidth. This is not neighborly. If you have another button you'd like to submit, please do so and I'll put it up. We like buttons, especially when we have choices!

Welcome, friends, and join the club.

Major props to Rachel for letting me steal portions of "The Rules" from her original post.

Isn't 40 years in prison a bit much?

You're minding your own business on the Internet, ogling yarn or knitting blogs or Googling your ex or whatever. Out of nowhere, you start getting those pesky little pop ups. Some of them are definitely not safe for work, and it seems like the more you click them away, the more they appear, cluttering up your screen.

How many times has it happened to you? Even with your virus protection, pop up blocker, etc, etc, etc, how many times have you experienced something similar to this?

Most of the time, it's a minor annoyance. Not for Jule Amero. For her, the very situation everyone who has ever browsed the Internet has experienced to some extent cost her her job, her peace of mind, and could send her to prison for FORTY YEARS. A substitute teacher who had pornographic pop ups appear on her computer during class, Amero is now facing jail time. Click here to read the story, and click here to donate to her defense fund.

Reading this story which was brought to my attention over at Scout's made me insane with anger. I have had this same exact thing happen to me while out on a jobsite. The site had a computer that was shared by about 4 users. When I arrived to troubleshoot a minor issue, the minute I opened the web browser, I was swamped with pornographic pop ups. After researching the issue with our IT guy, it was determined that a virus and adware had attacked the computer, making it impossible to avoid the pop ups. This woman was not even given the benefit of the doubt and is now being accused of endangering children. If this story doesn't make you DO something, I don't know what will.

    Monday Loves III

I've just re-discovered this CD, and it has been playing over and over in my car for a week.

Moleskines. Specifically, my new Moleskine sketchbook, in which I'm starting an art journal.

My new socks, as shown in the previous post. I'm in mad crazy love with those socks.

Sweet potatoes, cooked in savory dishes. I added some to homemade vegetable barley soup, threw some into a beef stew, and made this recipe. The flavor is so yummy and unexpected.

    These shirts. Etsy strikes again.

Ancestry.com. It's my new crack. I've managed to trace parts of my family back to the 1400's, and have discovered I am really, really, really German. Then there are the branches of the family who didn't enter the U.S. until the 1940's and finding any trace of them is proving to be surprisingly difficult.

Wild Oregano Oil. I won't link here because I cannot find a decent site with info about it that is not trying HARD to sell it, but this stuff is amazing. It tastes horrible, but if you put a drop in some warm salt water and gargle with it, your sore throat will go bye bye in no time.

All of the fantastic submissions for Yarnival! Keep 'em coming!

    Jaywalkers...This time, it's personal

It's been a peaceful weekend here at the ol' homestead. Brian and I would like to thank NyQuil for sponsoring the weekend, and Kleenex for providing such wonderful support.

Yep. Sick again. This time, it is both of us. We think it is the nasty virus everyone in town has, complete with fever, chills, splitting headaches, sore throats, sneezing, and body aches.

Anyone out there wanna trade me immune systems?

Anyway, we've both done a lot of sleeping, a lot of whining, and I've done a lot of knitting. I finished up these babies while watching a fanfreakintastic movie last night.

    Dscn3365

Sorry for the craptacular picture, I meant to take some outside today, but then I ended up falling asleep. Repeatedly. These are Jaywalkers, of course, in a Lost-inspired colorway from Yarntini. I love this yarn, love the color changes and the way it knits up. I'm so stinkin' proud of my new socks, it's a bit silly.

Immediately after finishing these, I cast on for some Monkey socks...I had started a pair a few weeks ago, and ended up frogging them as I was unhappy with the way they were turning out in the yarn I had selected. So far so good with the new pair, they are going incredibly fast.

Now, with 100% more knitting content!

    Look, I've been knitting!

    Dscn3286

These lovely warshrags have already been put to work in my kitchen. They are pretty, practical, and mighty absorbent. Project Spectrum-y too!

    Another Project Spectrum knit:

    Dscn3358

    Odessa.

    Dscn3363

Finally. I wore her yesterday because it has been pretty cold here the past few days. I mean, I'm not complaining or anything, I love the cold, and "cold" here is not as cold as most of you out there define it about now. Thanks to PuppyMomma Sarah (girl, are you blogless? Where is your blog now??) for the materials for Odessa which she generously sent me um, sometime last year, as part of SP7.

More PS knits to come. I've got some blue-grey-green Jaywalkers that should be done any minute now.

In Sister Watch 2007 news, my sister is dealing with a jackass insurance adjuster, and the possibility that she has a herniated disk (disc? which is it?). She's got very little sensation on the upper right side of her body and after seeing yet another doc, was sent for an MRI yesterday. She is still in a lot of pain, and extremely cranky. Say a little prayer or somethin' for her, would ya?

    Psssst........

    Are you familiar with Yarnival?

Yarnival is the creation of Eve, and has been up and running since last summer. It's a wonderful way to connect with the knitblog community, and everyone is welcome to submit an entry regardless of how long you have been blogging. If you haven't yet, you may want to check out some of the past issues....the latest issue should be out very soon as well.

Inspired? Got something you want to share? Give me your witty, your froggy, your shame, your pride. Bring it on. I'm editing the next edition, due out March 15th. Submit your entries to me using this link by March 1st. I can't wait to see all the entries, and am thrilled to have the opportunity to create the next edition for y'all. So what are you waiting for?? Send me those entries!

    For Brian

You always smile when I stand at the stove cooking, singing songs to the dog

and you chuckle when I trip over my own feet which happens so often

You never complain when I ask you to hand me my knitting scissors

or to turn down the tv

or to switch loads of laundry

when I cry, you let me put my head on your shoulder

where it fits so perfectly and

when I come downstairs each morning and see

    a fresh pot of coffee

what I hear is "I love you"

I'm in awe of your talent, your generosity, your good nature, and your taste in head wear. Every day I'm amazed that you are able to put up with me....I know living with and loving an obsessive compulsive control freak cannot be easy, but you manage to do it with a smile every single day. Thank you for your support, your honesty, and your love. Every time you tell me you are proud of me, every time I make you laugh, every morning when I wake up and see you (and Sampson) next to me, I'm reminded of just how lucky I am to have finally found the one person who lets me be me, in all my quirky glory. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you.

    Also?  I like your glasses.

I love you, B. Happy Valentines Day.
